How many hair extensions do I need for a full head?
How many hair extensions you need for a full head depends on several factors, but generally you can count on 3 to 9 packs of hair for I-Tip and Fusion and 3 to 7 packs for Tape-In. (I-Tip and Fusion packs come with 20 strands per pack; Tape-In packs include 10 wefts per pack, since wefts contain more hair than strands.) When deciding on how many extensions to order for yourself or for your client, you need to take into account the current length and thickness of the natural hair, as well as the desired length. With too few extension pieces, the finished product won’t look natural.
Here’s a quick and easy guide:
These are very rough estimates based on Babe’s hair extensions (we cannot speak for other brands). Every head of hair is different, so actual quantity needed may vary.
Remember that, unless you're installing purely for volume or color, adding length to a client's hair will require that you match the thickness at the bottom of the hair to the thickness at the top. Adding too many extensions will strain the client's hair and create a triangle-effect where the hair flares out towards the ends compared to the roots. Adding too few extensions (the more common problem) will result in a mullet--or, worse yet, piece-y threadbare strands peeking out from beneath the natural hair base.
As you become more experienced at working with extensions, you will develop an eye for estimating how many hair extensions are necessary for a full head. An experienced stylist can also help advise you. If you're uncertain about this part of the consultation process, we recommend that you take advantage of Babe's professional development courses, including Trade Show education events or even the Babe Mastery Tour. These classes are designed for stylists who already have a basic understanding of hair extensions, but would like to fine tune their technique or obtain certification specifically with Babe.
